User Permissions and Two Factor Authentication

August 8, 2024 Farooq Vt 0 Comments

User permissions and two factor authentication are a vital element of a robust security system. They reduce the risk of malicious or accidental insider activity, reduce the impact of data breaches, and ensure compliance with regulations.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) requires a user to enter credentials from two distinct categories in order to log into an account. This could include something the user is aware of (password or PIN code security question) or something they own (one-time verification passcode sent to their phone or authenticator app) or something they are (fingerprint or face scan).

Often the 2FA is a subset of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) which is comprised of many more factors than just two. MFA is typically a requirement in certain industries, for example healthcare (because of stringent HIPAA regulations), ecommerce and banking. The COVID-19 virus pandemic has also increased the importance of security for businesses that require two-factor authentication.

Enterprises are living entities and their security infrastructures are constantly evolving. Users shift roles and capabilities of hardware are changing and complex systems are now at the fingertips of users. It’s important to regularly reevaluate your two-factor authentication plan at regular intervals to ensure that it can keep up with these changes. One way to do this is through adaptive authentication which is a type of contextual authentication that will trigger policies based on how it is used, when and when a login request is received. Duo offers a central administrator dashboard which allows you to easily manage and set these types of policies.
